Too pretty to drink
We Vancouverites take our coffee seriously, obviously some more than others.
Not all of the hundreds of shops that serve up lattes and cafe au lait, or short shots of espresso, do the design thing. But even at the place on the corner near me, they’ll drop a heart-shaped dollop of powdered chocolate atop the foam on your cappuccino.
I’m not a fancy coffee guy, although I’ll admit to ordering the dark roast when given the choice, or an Americano when unsure about the strength of a place’s coffee.
Got to admit, though, it’s pretty.

Sushi sushi
Since moving to an area that is thick with restaurants serving sushi (there are at least half-a-dozen within walking distance), servings of raw fish have become at least a once-a-week pleasure.
The first dinner of the new year was at Sushi Sushi — tuna and salmon nigiri, a salmon, avocado and cream cheese roll and lots of wasabi — served by a small staff that was literally running to deal with a restaurant full of diners and a constantly ringing phone for delivery.
